Trip to Newchurch school

We went to Newchurch primary school to take part in an activity about bridges. First we had to build the tallest free-standing tower using ‘connect’ (Plastic bits that click together.) Ours was 132cm tall and looked amazing!.

Finally we had to build a bridge that held 10kg and stretched over 30cm. Ours held 9kg but then collapsed everywhere!!!! It was SOOO fun!!   By Lucy R

Tree Planting for Year 5

Yesterday we invited Sainsbury’s PR representative Tanya to Gurnard to help year 5 plant a set of trees that have been donated to our school by the Woodland Trust. We had a fabulous afternoon on the field, and everyone worked so hard they were exhausted by the end of the day! Tanya was really impressed by how well behaved and enthusiastic the children were, so we want to say a big thank you to her for helping us out.

Year 5 Get their Blood Pumping

In New Zealand Class we learned about the circulatory system. We drew round Oscar and put the parts of the circulatory system on the picture of Oscar. We had red and blue felt tips and used them to draw different parts of the circulatory system like the lungs, the heart, veins and arteries. Some of the groups had a heart in their shoulder instead of in the middle of their chest! Others had lungs in their stomach! It was fun!

Hydrogen Power!

Year five had the fantastic opportunity to see a hydrogen powered car that has been doing a tour of Britain. This is one of only eight hydrogen powered cars to have been built in Coventry in the West Midlands, and the scientists who worked on the project hope that their research will prove to be the future of environmentally friendly transport! As you can see from the pictures, we were fascinated by the technology involved, and really keen to have a closer look! Look out for one of these cars on the road in the future!

British Science Week in Year 5

This week we have been celebrating British Science Week with a series of exciting experiements. The children have been challenged to test out lots of interesting scientific theories and new ways of working, and everyone has really enjoyed it.
“I though it was very fun and messy, and I would like to do it again!” Ethan Rice, New Zealand Class.
“I really enjoyed it since we got to do experiments and find out what happens ourselves. I also enjoyed writing the conclusions!” Ben Goldsmith, Japan Class
“I liked doing the experiments, mixing the mixtures and figuring out how to separate them.” Sophia Elliott, Japan Class

Year 3’s Dinosaur Discoveries

On Wednesday 3rd February Year 3 went on a fabulous trip to Dinosaur Isle, where they learned all sorts of interesting things about fossils. Stella and Jacob from India class have written this report about the time they spent there:
“We went to Dinosaur Isle and we went on a double decker bus. When we got off a man met us and told us about different fossils and we got to hold them. Some of them were fossil poo! After that we went to this museum and saw a robotic dinosaur. It was a bit scary. Then we had lunch in the education room. After lunch we went fossil hunting and all of us found 3 dinosaur footprints. On the way back we sat on the top deck of the bus.”

“I loved it all and it was great fun! I was annoyed that I kept finding Flint.” Jacob

“I found fossil wood and a volcanic rock. I really enjoyed myself and liked all of it. My least favourite thing was the robotic dinosaur because it looked like a dinosaur in the mirror and it really sounded like one!” Stella

New Zealand Class shine a light

New Zealand class planned an experiment to find out if light is affected by distance. We wrote key vocabulary to help us understand light such trajectory, reflection and light source.

After that we went to the science room and got equipment out. Then we started the experiment.  We turned the torch on and got a sheet of paper. After we saw the light reflect we realised that the further the paper is away from the light the dimmer it gets.

Here are some examples of the recording we did:

I think it was fun experiment because it was with torches and I like light sources and we had to try to make it rebound off the mirror and it was fun ! Henry WB

I think it was a fun experiment and I enjoyed seeing the light reflect and also completing diagrams in our books. Izzy F

I think the experiment was fun, I enjoyed doing the diagrams and working with the torches and seeing the light reflect off the mirrors. Freya T

Year 5 Dazzle With Their Knowledge Of Light!

In Year 5 we have been learning about light and how we see. We have looked at the structure of the eye, and now we are learning about how light travels and how we can manipulate light to travel in different directions. We used lots of resources in our lesson and we were pretty impressed with some of the results!

Take a look at some of the pictures of our discoveries.
